Program Description This course is designed to present a comprehensive approach on climate change in the Tropical Andes of Colombia, through lectures on the geography of the Andes, its physical conditions (climate, atmospheric dynamics, glaciers, ecohydrology) and biotic aspects (ecosystems and vegetation), how these respond to climate change, and some of the adaptation strategies to be considered. It will be complemented with guided visits to representative places in Medellin and its surroundings, and a final field trip to a representative mountain area near the city of Manizales (National Park Los Nevados), to apply the theory from lectures and recognize scientific research conducted in the zone.

Facilities and Resources The course will be developed with a theoretical and practical approach. During the first week, each day will have morning sessions with one lecture on a specific topic. During the afternoons a visit will be programmed to selected sites of the city of Medellin and its surroundings, allowing the students to recognize the social, cultural, economic and ecological conditions of the territory. The second week will have a field trip to the Los Nevados National Park, where students will observe the diverse ecosystems in the mountain range, their climate, geology, soils and biological diversity. Also, they will recognize the ongoing research and monitoring conducted by the Poleka Kasue observatory in the altitudinal range, having the opportunity to observe and collect field data for climate change research.
